Keeping a Good Habit of AC Maintenance
The AC system in your home is one of the largest appliance investments that you have, and you should take certain precautions to properly maintain your unit to protect your investment. While it is a very good thing to have your unit serviced or inspected annually, there are some things you can do yourself as part of your AC maintenance program.
Here are some things you can do at home.
Changing Out Old Filters:
The most important thing you can do as part of any AC maintenance regimen is to keep your filters clean. Depending on the quality of the filter chosen, and the manufacturer’s recommendations, some filters in heavily used units may need changing as often as monthly.
Also remember when thinking about your filters, the household conditions. If you have indoor pets, smoke, burn candles frequently, have health concerns, or live by a desert area there might be reasons to either upgrade your filters or change them out more than once per month. Keeping an eye on your filters is a very proactive approach to AC maintenance.
Keeping a few extra filters on hand also makes this job a bit easier. Put a monthly or bi-monthly reminder on your refrigerator door, the family bulletin board, or somewhere you will see it frequently.
Programing Your Thermostat
If you have a programmable thermostat, set it to the appropriate temperature for when you are home or away at specific times during the day. Setting a schedule can maximize your systems in running time.
